Stop – Don’t Pour In Drain Cleaner Until You Read This Report!

Consumer drain cleaning products are concentrated caustics, i.e., either strong bases or acids. Alkaline drain openers (ALKDOs) are typically formulated as either sodium hydroxide (liquid or granular form) or sulfuric acid drain openers (SADOs). They are dangerous chemicals and can potentially be hazardous to your health. The danger arises from their potential to injure eyes, lungs and skin and from their potential to damage clothing and household materials like those in a beautiful bathroom.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for years 1996 – 2006 – body areas most involved in drain cleaner injuries were: head (16% of all injuries), trunk (28%), arms (28%) and legs (28%). Sixty-four percent of all head injuries involved eyes. From a comparative risk analysis standpoint, the CPSC study concludes that while the likelihood of drain cleaner accidents is low, the magnitude of consequences is great with the loss of sight in one or both eyes being the greatest likelihood.

In March 2011, Toxic fumes at Paul Revere Intermediate School in Blue Island (Chicago) sent 32 children and teachers to the hospital after drain cleaner and bleach were used to “clear” a clogged drain at the school.

Moreover, if you visit Wikipedia on drain cleaning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drain_cleaner) results are all but disappointing when home remedies or consumer drain cleaners are employed to de-clog a drain. You have seen the commercials: “it chews through hair and grease…,” giving you the impression that you can just pour it into your drain and water will flow through like Niagara Falls.

Unfortunately, most clogs happen before the trap and thus consumer drain cleaners get little time to act. And when they do the mass of jelly they make the soft deposits into just sits before the trap as a catch, making consumer drain cleaners self-fulfilling money makers for the companies selling them. Furthermore, if you use them a lot, you’ll need a plumber anyway. And the job will be to replace your plated trim and possibly even pipe. And, those jobs can be expensive.

SO – IS IT WORTH IT TO DRAIN CLEAN WITH CONSUMER DRAIN CLEANERS – NO!
